Science and technology

Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.

Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.

STEM

STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) is a way of referring to a broad range of educational programs developed to prepare students for future study in those fields. In addition to subject-specific learning, STEMs aims to foster creative and innovative thinking, inquiring minds, logical reasoning and collaboration skills. We are also currently updating our approach to this movement by adopting the STEM into steam equation which adds art and design into the innovation mix.

Code Rangers

Kids in charge of technology

Hosted by Marrickville Public School, Code Rangers offer 9 weeks of workshops for Year 3 to 6 students, held in our library twice a week.

Code Rangers teaches children to code - putting them in charge of technology. Coding is the language used by computers to develop games, animations, and apps.

Workshops are led by Nicola O'Brien, parent, coder and enthusiast who partners up with great talent from The University of Sydney to deliver engaging, relevant content. All abilities and interests are welcome – especially girls!

Students learn to code in a creative way. In a nine week block we will create great animations and games. In doing this, we learn key computational thinking concepts of decomposition, pattern matching, abstraction, developing algorithms.

All equipment is provided, one computer per child. Contact our school office for more information.
